The Mighty Brettonians Ride!

So, my latest project is a full 2500 point tournament force of Brettonians. You remember don't you, men at arms, peasant bowmen, knights, trebuchets and more! If you enjoy reading about medieval times, the chivalric knights with their mighty warhorses, this is the perfect army for you to consider playing Warhammer Fantasy with.

To see the full line visit the Brettonian Landing page at Games Workshop.

So, while I am a bit light on pictures currently, I will be adding some more soon (after I repair the camera the cat knocked off the counter that I use specifically for my miniature photography)

I received a wide array of units to begin with from the client, including:

  • Peasant Bowmen
  • Knights of the Realm
  • Pegasus Knights
  • Trebuchets
  • Grail Knights (But these have actual horses, not cocounts!)
Starting out simply, while working around my school, work and photography schedule, I started acessing the models. I also was waiting on several items to come in that had been ordered. (I love assembling models!!!!)

The arrival of the boxes meant I could now assemble all of the models that I had in the wings waiting to be assembled:

I took over the computer desk, much to my fiancee's dismay to watch Netflix and assemble bowmen!

The remaining Pegasus Knights, bringing the total to (9) for the army!

At last, primed! Although, disappointment too, as it was the last of my black primer and I have to order more :( so I now have to wait patiently to continue priming,.

You mean I have to wait?!

The go to, be all, end all primer I order from Cali is out of stock!!! Why couldn't they have told me this a while ago? I have been patiently waiting, because it's the primary primer I like to use for large projects, called Board to Pieces. It's an inexpensive primer in comparison to others for the amount I tend to use while working on commission projects.

Closeup of the mid way point of the Pegasus Knight leader's horse. Each unit of (3) will have one this colour, and the others will be grey/white. Very challenging model to paint, there are a lot of subtle details. I've got (9) total to paint!

Some of the finished bowmen. I tested out my other camera to see if the big boy can take pictures of models too. Seems like it can do a reasonably good job. These are just lacking basing, but I am planning on doing that all at the same time.

I am ready for my closeup Mr. Deville! I bring closeups today of some of the figures I have completed. I wish I had made it farther than I have at this point, but wow, I suddenly hate Organizational Management class. Even if I am doing classes online, the massive amount of writing that I am doing for this class and my 200 level Business level English class are insane! I get tired of looking at a computer after dealing with that nonesense. It's been limiting my ability to work on models too, as it seems like I am spending the entire day on the computer doing homework, and not a lot to show for it. Infuriating really.
Picture
Closeup of one of the models completed. While the bowmen are done just as a basic tabletop level, I couldn't help but have a couple stand out and be unique with the army colours on them. I think it turned out well!
Picture
The majority of the peasants are going to look like this. Very simple, plain colouration, greens and browns (tree and woods colours). All metallics are a golden colour (Blighted gold most commonly) and while the shields aren't completed (see figure here for example) I am going to go through and do those with all the peasants at the same time and put the yellow/red on them so the shields are very bright. I want it to give the sense that they are very proud of the duchy they are a part of, and always make sure it's very obvious where their allegiance lies.

The priming corner, coming to a space near you!

I am going to take a break from the bowmen for a bit. I am starting to see all the same colours too often, which I feel that is making my work less effective. I want to make sure they all have the same batch of colours across the board, and when you're working with the same batch of colours on similar models for a long time, you swear you're duplicating a figure somewhere, even if you have 10 different colours that can make up what, a thousand different combinations! LOL!! To defrustrate myself, I am creating a plan of attack towards a trebuchet. A treat for myself and feeling like I am working closer to the completion of this awesome army!

Thanks Adam for the opportunity to paint a Brettonian Force!

Lovely English weather out there!

Rain. All weekend. So much for getting the priming done that I was planning on. It's all right, I can start it on Monday. While I don't generally mind priming in the rain, it's been raining too hard for me to have success with it in the apartment. I had planned on going through the rest of the figures I have and seeing what I am in the mood to work on next. So many choices!

Trebuchet away!

The trebuchet has been the item of choice to work on this week, and part of last weekend. It's a fun model to paint (doesn't look too fun to assemble!) and it is absolutely full of subtle detail work. I am sticking with very plain colouration on this model, standard brown for the wood, and brass for the detail work. I originally was going with silver, but I ended up putting bronze on it, because it seemed to pop so much more with it and the darker wood colouration. That being said, I am going to show pictures of it to the client, and see if he still does want the silver instead. I had a moment of creativity while doing it and the bronze suddenly felt more "proper" on it with the colour combination.
Also, 14 more peasants completed. Even after the Army Painter Matte Varnish (APMV) cans screwed up and put white flecks all over them. Luckily I could not only fix it, but I had a backup NON APMV can on hand to finish them up.

No current updates on the project since the trebuchet. Classes have been hectic, and I have spent the past two weeks working on final projects! Here's hoping I can spend some of my time off between semesters to work on it more!

Test Model for the "white" Pegasus Knights.

Trying for a sensible colour combination here. White, with pale blue highlights.

Marching..Err..Flying? Horses..The brettonians continue their invasion.

Not much in the update department so far. Worked on completing the rest of the peasants, and I think I have them all done, save the shield colouration (which I am doing all at the same time for the lot of 'em) and the trebuchet and crew are also finished. It took me quite a while to work out something that would work for what I saw the pegasus knights being, but I think I've got it down.

Now, I just need to get the colouration to work out on them, as well as the regular Brettonian Knights. It's a bit of a challenge, as I haven't worked on an army with this many horses on it (my own High Elves are only assembled. I don't care if colour ever gets on those models..lol) and I am finding a bit of a challenge to keeping myself totally motivated for completion. This can also be due to roller derby practice, and a lot of schoolwork. Gotta say though, online Rosetta Stone is fun!

Pegasus Knights have invaded my work area!
Between the huge amount of school work I have on my plate (almost finished with my two year degree!!) I haven't been able to get as much painting in as I'd have liked. So far, this is the progression for the Pegasus Knights. It takes a while to be able to work through these steps (Louisiana weather I curse you!) because it take so long for each portion of it to dry. Even going through the six that I am currently working on, when you reach the sixth one, the first one is not even close to dry!
But, here are the results so far:
Picture
Right to Left: Far Right: Last unit as I received them from the customer. Middle: Primed white. Far Left: Two stages of the white painting, and the far back palomino is the leader.
And, a few days later (Sorry, I didn't have time to post earlier on so the progression was evident) here is the continuation of:
Picture
Continued progression: Far left: Base layers Left: Multiple drybrushes later. Right: All black areas are blocked in. Far Right: Blocked in and almost complete Palomino lead horse.

Oh GW...Really?

So GW decided to go through and revamp the paint line...The entire paint line, in the middle of this project! The main colours I am using (thankfully I was able to get a couple extra pots, so I hope it's just enough!), are:
- Asuremen Blue Wash
- Iyanden Darksun
- Mechrite Red (kind of.. Switched to P3 Skorne Red for better quality/less clotting)
- Devlan Mud
- Badab Black
- Dwarf Bronze
- Shining Gold

Luckily, I managed to get my hands on extras of these, or I found an acceptable switch, so it shouldn't impede work too badly. School on the other hand has kind of slowed me down significantly, which is disappointing, as I am looking forward to having the army completed.
The Pegasus Knights have a surprising amount of detail work on them. It's not really as visible with the model unprimed as it was once I got the white primer down. It's kind of interesting, but in a way frustrating at times, as I keep missing tiny little details! After a while it got very amusing, and I just kept having a chuckle when I missed something.
I am trying to shoot for the Pegasus Knights to be finished this month, but it looks like it's going to be going into next month before completion with my school work load.

As soon as I find that elusive battery charger, I can get some new pictures up! Losing the charger to the camera that is specifically for modeling photos can be more than just "frustrating". I finally did locate it, after tearing the house apart. My bag ate it. A bag I didn't ever transport the camera in..Weird.

Flying Knights, oh my!
Successfully managed to find replacements or extras of all the colours I was using from the GW line! Yay! I hope the extras are enough to complete, and I am still keeping my fingers crossed at this point.
The Pegasus Knights are almost completed, then it's on to the next unit. I have been saving myself a treat for a while now, and I think I am going to work on the Grail Knights next, as a treat for myself. I already found appropriate paints to use for the colours I needed so it's not going to be too much of a problem at all!
